SPORT AND RECREATION
Sports Partnerships have been set up in conjunction
with the Irish Sports Council in more than half the
Local Authority areas. Counties nearest to us who
have them include Donegal, Mayo, Sligo, Roscommon,
Monaghan and Westmeath. These are financed by the
Irish Sports Council and are representative of the
various parties involved in the promotion of Sport
and Recreational Activity in the counties concerned.
Leitrim put in a bid for a Sports Partnership a
few years ago but the Irish Sports Council are currently
reviewing the progress of the previously established
Partnerships before creating additional ones.
In the meantime many of the functions of a Sports
Partnership in counties which do not have one are
carried out by the Vocational Education Committee.
This is so in Leitrim and the most recent of those
activities has been the allocation of the annual Sports
Grants to clubs. The Leitrim VEC at it's most recent
meeting approved grants of €130 to each eligible
club which had applied. Applications are sought each
year in November and the scheme is advertised annually
in the local newspaper
