DEPOPULATION SUB COMMITTEE
Leitrim Community Forum has had a Depopulation Sub
Committee for the past few years, A day long seminar
on depopulation was held in Kiltyclogher two years
ago and subsequently a report was prepared for Minister
Eamon O Cuiv relating to measures which could be taken
to stabilise population in the areas shown to have
suffered decline in the last Census. More recently
Seamus Caulfield launched a position paper on behalf
of the Community Forum. Chairman Pat Love stated that
the position paper is not the final word in this debate
and it is hoped that the paper inspires more people
to become involved in the debate.
With the new Census being taken later in April there
will be a new and more clear picture emerging when
the preliminary results are issued- probably in the
autumn. It will be for the Depopulation Committee
to address the new situation and, indeed, emerging
issues such as the cost of transport which might have
a bearing on the situation.
Members of the Sub Committee are Padraig Griffin
(Chairperson) Michael McGovern, Thomas Kelly, Pat
Love & David Spence.
